When a staccato of gunshots rang out in Ode-Aye Village, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State yesterday, nobody was at war, as it should have been expected.
The shots were fired by a team of police sergeants to send home a gallant cop, Sgt. Felix Igbasan. He died fighting armed robbers in Abuja.
“Nigeria Police and indeed, Nigeria, has lost one of her bravest warriors,” the slain crime fighter’s boss, CSP Abba Kyari, who is Officer in Charge of the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT) told NewsMakers.
Igbasan was shot and wounded in his left leg during a fierce battle with bandits, who robbed a senior Immigration Officer on the day Nigeria was celebrating independence anniversary in Abuja, last October 1.
He succumbed to the injuries on November 14, at Maitama General Hospital, Abuja.
According to Kyari, the 8-man gang led by one Gabriel Alfa was smashed and four AK 47 rifles were recovered.
“The contributions of Sgt. Felix Igbasan in this very operation and several high risk operations in Lagos SARS and IRT are too numerous to mention,” Kyari said.
