Book Bonus: Simplified Criminal Law in Nigeria by Oluwatomi Ajayi

Crime is a major problem in the society which destabilises and threatens public safety. Where citizens only have little or no knowledge about CRIMINAL LAW, such society will no doubt suffer from ignorance. To make the public well-informed, with regards to knowing the particular Law which says certain specified acts are not acceptable, means simplicity of that Law becomes key so that citizens can make decisions whether to stay off crime or be ready to serve punishments when they become offenders.

Therefore, in conformity with Goal 16 of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Agenda, which addresses the right of the public to have access to information and relevant institutions to build capacity at all levels to combat crimes, this book resonates with the SDGs objective not only to increase legal information and knowledge in a SIMPLIFIED form but also an attempt to stem the tide of crime.

This reader-friendly book is divided into six chapters and focusses on 21 specific crimes, ranging from the traditional criminal offences to the emerging or evolving crimes such as Cybercrime, Terrorism and Corruption. The book goes further to discuss the ‘Theories and Dimensions to Crime, Role of Truth, Morals and Suspicion, Restorative Justice, Creative Sentencing, Rules of Evidence, Rights of Suspects’ and lots more. It is indeed an invaluable book for Law Students, Lawyers, Law Enforcement Officers, Law Reformers, Security Practitioners, Criminologists and the Public.

This book published and available for sale at University of Lagos Press and Bookshop consists of 143 pages while the Foreword was written by Mrs Ade Adeyemo, the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Law Reform Commission (LawRecom).

The author, Oluwatomi  Ajayi (Nee Awolesi) is a Legal Researcher who believes there is always a case for simplicity; holds the Bachelor of Laws Degree of the University of Lagos, Nigeria and Masters of Law in Legislative Drafting from the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. She is also the Chairperson, Research Committee of African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Nigeria Chapter. Her first book published by Malthouse Press is titled ‘Crime Scene and Forensic Investigation: Basics of Tunnel Vision on Interrogation Process’
