Boko Haram terrorists have killed eight members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and left three others unaccounted for during an attack on the Warabe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
The assault occurred on Thursday, at about 10am, when the community volunteers, who act as local security, were out collecting firewood.
A CJTF member in Warabe told HumAngle that all those killed, except one victim, belonged to the civilian force.
Warabe has no permanent military deployment, forcing the CJTF to serve as the community’s only frontline defence as the insurgency, now in its second decade, persists.
Witnesses said around 20 militants arrived on five motorcycles, heavily armed with machine guns, while others advanced on foot.
The CJTF members attempted to repel the ambush but were overwhelmed once they ran out of ammunition.
After the killings, the attackers seized the victims’ weapons and reportedly used their mobile phones to lure more hunters under the guise of requesting support.
By the time reinforcements reached the scene, the militants had already retreated with the stolen arms.
Three CJTF members remain missing and are feared to have been abducted.
The nearest military base is in Pulka, about seven kilometres from Warabe, while Gwoza town lies approximately 15 kilometres away.
Locals say the lack of a military presence leaves them vulnerable to repeated assaults.
