Unidentified gunmen reportedly shot dead two policemen at a checkpoint in Port Harcourt, Rivers State yesterday, bringing the number of policemen killed in one day to six.

Gunmen had reportedly attacked Agudama-Ekpetiama police station in Bayelsa State and Otoko police station in Imo State, killing four policemen, including a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and a pregnant policewoman in the Bayelsa attack.

The DPO, identified as Ola Rosanla, was reportedly killed in cold blood, as the gunmen made him kneel down before shooting him point blank.

The attackers also left two policemen injured and carted away all the firearms and ammunition in the station’s armoury.

In the Imo attack, the gunmen reportedly raided the station’s armoury and carted away four rifles and thereafter set the station on fire.

After killing the two policemen in Port Harcourt in an operation that lasted less than five minutes, the gunmen also reportedly took away their rifles.

The incident, which occurred at Ojoto Mile 2, about 2pm, caused anxiety as residents and passers-by ran helter-skelter when they heard gunshots.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the two policemen were manning a checkpoint when they were attacked.

Business owners in the area reportedly closed their shops after the incident.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, stating that the hoodlums attacked and killed two policemen.

Omoni also confirmed that two rifles belonging to the cops were taken away by the hoodlums.
