A rare albino buffalo in Bangladesh, nicknamed “Donald Trump” because of its flowing blond tuft of hair, has been dramatically spared from Eid al-Adha sacrifice after a last minute intervention by the government.
The nearly 700 kilogram buffalo had already been sold for ritual slaughter ahead of the Muslim festival before authorities stepped in on Wednesday, according to Reuters.
Officials said the animal’s sudden internet fame and the huge crowds gathering to see it triggered security concerns and prompted the decision to save it.
The cream coloured buffalo, with its pinkish nose and distinctive blond “comb over”, became a social media sensation in recent days after photographs and videos spread widely online.
Curious visitors travelled from across Bangladesh to the farm in Narayanganj, near Dhaka, to snap selfies with the unusual animal.
Bangladesh Home Minister, Salahuddin Ahmed, reportedly ordered that the buffalo be removed from its buyer, who would be refunded, and relocated to the national zoo in Dhaka instead.
Zoo officials said a special shed and caretaker had already been arranged for the celebrity buffalo.
Its owner, Ziauddin Mridha, told Reuters the buffalo had become a local attraction because of its striking hair and calm personality.
He said the animal required special care, including several baths a day.
Albino buffaloes are considered extremely rare in Bangladesh, where dark skinned buffaloes are the norm.
But it was the animal’s resemblance to Donald Trump, rather than its rarity alone, that appears to have transformed it into an unlikely national celebrity.
The story has also generated amused reactions online, with social media users calling it “the headlines we live for” while others joked that the buffalo had enjoyed better political protection than many humans.
