An eyewitness has revealed that delay by the police in responding promptly to the distress call by the authorities of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto contributed largely to the eventual killing of a female student of the school accused of blasphemy against Islam.
According to a report by Church Times, the eyewitness, who preferred not to be identified, the victim, Deborah Yakubu, who is from Kebbi State, could have been saved if the police had acted promptly to rescue her
The eyewitness said immediately it was obvious the mob was determined to kill her, the security officials of the school took custody of her.
“The security men kept her and shielded her from the mob.
“They then invited the police. But the police did not make any move. They did not get to the school until the mob overpowered them, dragged her out, and stoned her to death. If the police had come in time they would have saved her from being killed,” the eyewitness claimed.
The eyewitness further demanded that the role of the police should also be investigated if the government is sincere about getting to the root of the matter.
“It is clear to me that they intentionally allowed the lady to be killed. They believe she deserved to die. This is really unfortunate. As it is, we are not sure if the incident will not repeat itself.”
The victim was yesterday morning stoned and beaten to death by an mob, comprising fellow students, for allegedly making blasphemous statements about Prophet Mohammed. Her dead body was also burnt.
Yakubu, who was studying Economics, was the female Coordinator of the Fellowship of Christian Students in the college.
A loose translation of a voicenote she allegedly sent to her class WhatsApp group reads, “Holy Ghost fire, nothing will happen to us. the group is not created for sending nonsense things. It is created to send past questions, if there is test, or if we are given assignments not all these nonsense things. Which kind prophet, nonsense prophet”
