Members of a Nigerian separatist movement operating on a London-based Radio Biafra are plotting to stage a protest march and ambush President Muhammadu Buhari during his official visit to the United States of America (USA).
In a broadcast monitored by Chief Detective magazine in Lagos on Saturday, the group called on its members in the USA to stage a big protest throughout Buhari’s state visit and flood the social media, Twitter, with their liberation messages and demands.
The presidential delegation will fly to the USA today, according to official sources.
The activists, led by one Nnamdi Kanu who identified himself as the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, called the President unprintable names as they dished out instructions to members on how to go about the protest.
Kanu said in his all-day broadcast: “The movers and shakers of America must hear us. We will tweet from Saturday tillWednesday when he (Buhari) will be leaving. We want to show him that we are popular in America.”
Radio Biafra’s internet transmission has been very active. But its sister pirate station known as Biafra Radio, transmitting from Eastern Nigeria, has been yanked off the airwaves by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
The NBC in a statement, last week, claimed to have “effectively neutralised the illegal broadcasts from the seditious pirate radio station that has recently shattered the peace in parts of the Southeast of Nigeria with unsavoury hate messages”.
NBC added that its officials working with security operatives had also tracked down, neutralised and confiscated transmitter equipment from several locations in the region. Some suspects were said to have been arrested.
Kanu, who also called himself the Commander of the Army of Biafra, said in his latest broadcast: “We were not blocked. Satlink Communication, in Israel, turned the transmission off after an official complaint from the Federal Government of Nigeria. They bought over Satlink, but they can’t stop us. We are still operating legally in UK. We registered in England and we are paying taxes. Go and check, we also have the largest following of over 600, 000 people on facebook.”
Kanu launched several abusive attacks on former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting Buhari.
He also attacked The Nation and The Sun newspapers for describing the secessionists’ communication platform as a pirate radio.
NBC is, however, calling on the public to disregard the hate messages coming from “the misguided station”.
The Commission urged Nigerians to unite in joining hands with the government to build a stronger and more prosperous nation.
