The police in Lagos and Rivers states have held three fake officers in their midst.
Officers in Rivers State told NewsmakersNG that on October 2, 2018, at about 11:30 am, at Mini Okoro police station, in Port Harcourt, a man introduced himself to an officer as DSP David, and claimed to be the younger brother to a serving Deputy Inspector General of Police.
Then, the officer identified as Commander Gwarzo asked him what cadet course he belonged to. He replied Course 26. Unfortunately for him, Gwarzo belongs to that set.
NewsmakersNG learnt that when he was arrested and investigated, David turned out to be a fake policeman.
Investigations further revealed that David had been parading himself as a second-in-command at the Mini Okoro Area Command Headquarters, and was found to have been leading a team of trained policemen.
According to the police, David couldn’t name his course number, where he trained as a cadet, his AP number, show his Police ID card, or mention even one of his course mates.
In Lagos, the Police recovered a K2 automatic rifle from a man impersonating officers.
The 42-year-old man identified as Sunday Owiocho was paraded by the Lagos State commissioner of police (CP) Imohimi Edgal, who revealed that one K2 automatic rifle with 26 rounds of ammunition was recovered from the suspect among other dangerous weapons.
He said, “On September 28, the operatives of the Command charged with the responsibility of recovering illegal/prohibited firearms, arrested one Sunday Owoicho, 42 years, who was found with one K2 automatic rifle with 26 rounds of live ammunition.
“During interrogation, it was revealed that the suspect had been impersonating as a law enforcement officer and at various times, robbed innocent citizens by means of the arm in his possession. The investigation is ongoing to unearth his gang members and those aiding and abating him in the crime world.
“Similarly, the Command arrested one Sunday Joseph, 43 years, who had been impersonating as a traffic police officer at Oshodi and has been extorting unsuspecting motorists in the area. To make himself credible, he adorns green colour combat trousers and a black T-Shirt.
“We recovered from him one Jack Knife and one Tear Gas canister.”
