England survived a fierce Scandinavian challenge to book their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Norway 2-1 after extra time in a gripping quarter-final in Miami on Saturday night.
The Three Lions looked to be in trouble when Norway struck first through Andreas Schjelderup, whose clinical finish handed the Vikings a deserved first-half lead. Led by the dangerous Erling Haaland and the creative Martin Ødegaard, Norway threatened to produce one of the tournament’s biggest upsets as England struggled to find their rhythm.
England, however, responded with the resilience that has defined their campaign. Jude Bellingham hauled his side level before the interval, finishing brilliantly after a flowing move to restore parity and ignite England’s comeback.
The second half developed into a tense tactical battle. Both teams had goals ruled out, while England and Norway traded attacks in a contest that showcased outstanding goalkeeping, desperate defending and immense physical commitment under demanding Miami conditions. A late England penalty award was also overturned after a VAR review, ensuring the drama rolled into extra time.
With penalties looming, Bellingham once again emerged as England’s hero. Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland failed to deal with a long-range effort, and the Real Madrid midfielder reacted quickest to pounce on the loose ball and fire home the decisive winner, sparking wild celebrations among England’s players and supporters.
Norway threw everything forward in the closing stages, but England held firm to secure a hard-earned victory that keeps alive their dream of lifting a first World Cup since 1966. Thomas Tuchel’s men will now face the winner of the Argentina-Switzerland quarter-final in the semi-finals as they move within two matches of global glory.
England’s victory also means the World Cup’s semi-final lineup is beginning to take shape, with France set to face Spain in the other last-four encounter.
