Beaten and Humbled: Bolt Driver Apologises to Lawmaker who Assaulted Him over Simple Delivery

Pat Stevens/

Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, has publicly apologised to a politician who allegedly assaulted him over a simple delivery misunderstanding.

Abuwatseya’s emotional video statement, released yesterday, comes after an incident on October 28 that left him shaken and humiliated.

In the video, Abuwatseya addresses Nigerians, expressing regret for any “provocation” he may have caused and calling for unity and forgiveness. “Please, Nigerians, let’s forgive and forget,” he says, invoking the Lord’s Prayer to emphasise the value of mercy.

Abuwatseya’s heartfelt apology, coming after a distressing experience, has touched many, with citizens questioning why a person subjected to violence should feel compelled to ask for forgiveness.

The disturbing altercation occurred when Abuwatseya arrived at the Abuja residence of Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, to deliver a package of snails.

A viral video shows Ikwechegh, visibly enraged, repeatedly slapping and berating the driver after Abuwatseya asked him to come outside to collect the package.

The footage has sparked widespread outrage, with many decrying the apparent abuse of power and expressing deep sympathy for the driver.

In response to mounting public backlash, Ikwechegh issued a formal apology on social media, acknowledging that his behavior did not meet the standards expected of a public official.

He claimed that he and Abuwatseya had engaged in alternative dispute resolution, reaching a “mutual and respectful agreement.”
