Malik Yahya/

Defense Minister, Major General Bashir Magashi had in February urged Nigerians to stand and face bandits. Ten people died doing that today.

The courageous citizens reportedly tried to resist some bandits who came for a businessman in Sokoto State. They were overpowered and killed. Several others were injured.

Reports say the bandits stormed Amarawa Village in the Ilela local government area of Sokoto State and overpowered those who confronted them.

According to the BBC Hausa report, the gunmen had warned the locals to stay away but they refused and attempted to free the man.

The attackers overpowered the locals, killing many including one man identified as Rabiu Mika Ilu before they whisked the businessman away.

The police in Sokoto confirmed the attack but told the BBC Hausa they could not give details as the investigation was ongoing.

Meanwhile, the dead have been buried while those who sustained gunshot wounds were reportedly receiving treatment at a hospital.
