Fresh concerns have emerged over the security situation in Zamfara State after suspected bandits abducted seven students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda during a late-night attack on their residence in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.

The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the incident on Wednesday, saying the students were seized by armed men who stormed their off-campus accommodation in the Low-Cost area of Kaura Namoda town.

Police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, disclosed that the attack occurred on Tuesday night and that security agencies had immediately launched efforts to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the victims.

Although authorities have yet to release the identities of the abducted students, the incident has heightened anxiety among residents, students and parents in an area that has repeatedly come under attack from heavily armed criminal groups.

The latest abduction underscores the persistent insecurity confronting parts of north-western Nigeria, where bandit groups continue to carry out kidnappings, raids and attacks on communities despite ongoing military and police operations.

Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda is one of the major tertiary institutions in Zamfara State and draws students from across the country.

The attack on its students is likely to renew concerns about the vulnerability of off-campus residences and the safety of students living outside institutional premises.

The incident comes barely weeks after security operatives recorded a series of breakthroughs in the state.

In May, the Zamfara Police Command announced the rescue of three abducted teenagers during a joint patrol operation in the Bingi Forest area of Maru Local Government Area.

Police said the victims were found wandering in the forest and were safely reunited with their families.

Similarly, security operatives recently arrested suspected members of an armed gang and recovered firearms and ammunition during an operation in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.

The police described the arrests as part of an intensified crackdown on criminal networks operating in the state.

Despite these operations, Zamfara remains one of the states most affected by banditry and mass abductions.

Criminal groups operating across forested areas in the North-West have increasingly targeted villages, travellers, schools and residential communities for ransom.

As of Wednesday evening, there was no indication that the abductors had established contact with the families of the students or issued any ransom demand.

The Zamfara State Police Command said efforts were ongoing to locate the victims and apprehend those responsible, while urging residents to provide useful information that could assist security agencies in their operations.
