The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the former Social Democratic Party governorship candidate in Ondo State, Bamidele Akingboye, was murdered.
Commissioner of Police, Olorundare Jimoh, disclosed that the autopsy report had been received, enabling investigators to proceed with what he described as “full investigation and prosecution.”
He stated that findings from the autopsy conducted on September 11, together with fresh intelligence, resulted in the re-arrest and renewed detention of seven of the fourteen family members earlier questioned in connection with the case.
According to him, the police are now awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to determine the appropriate charges.
“With the toxicology results concluded, we await the advice of the DPP so that prosecution can commence against anyone found culpable,” Jimoh said.
Detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti, Yaba, had previously arrested and interrogated nine close relatives and aides over the suspicious circumstances surrounding Akingboye’s death.
Investigators had flagged a N50 million transfer from the deceased’s bank account, allegedly shared among some immediate family members, as a matter of major concern.
