Attack on Ekweremadu: Nigerian Embassy Indicts German Police

German Police authorities reportedly declined to provide security protection at venue of the event where former Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, was manhandled by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

This allegation was contained in a press release issued today by the Nigerian Embassy in Germany on the incident.

The German police authorities have however defended their position on the issue, adding that they would not be seeking the arrest of anyone over the incident.

A spokesman for the German police told Channels TV this evening that the incident was a genuine protest by some aggrieved Nigerians against their government official, hence, there would be no further investigation.

Ekweremadu was among the dignitaries invited to the event organised by Ndigbo Germany, in Nuremberg on Saturday, and was billed to give a keynote address before he was reportedly beaten up and chased away from the venue.

The lawmaker was accused by IPOB members of conspiring with the Federal Government to proscribe the group in the South East and to kill its followers.

The embassy, in its statement, also requested the Germany government to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident with a view to ensuring that the perpetrators face justice.

Meanwhile, Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria.

He reportedly arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja today.

The Senator told journalists at the airport that the attack did not represent the character of the majority of Nigerians.
