Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Federal Government of secretly reviving a Lagos-era revenue monopoly through the appointment of Xpress Payment Solutions Limited as a new Treasury Single Account collecting agent.

He claimed the decision mirrors the Alpha Beta model linked to Lagos politics under President Bola Tinubu, saying it could turn Nigeria into “a private holding company controlled by a small circle of vested interests.”

Atiku described the move as insensitive, arguing that citizens are grieving lives lost to insecurity while the government is “expanding private revenue pipelines.”

He questioned why the deal was rushed without oversight and demanded its suspension, publication of all contract terms and a full audit of TSA operations.

“Nigeria’s revenues are not political spoils,” he said, urging a return to transparency and public accountability.

The FIRS defended the arrangement, saying Xpress Payments is simply one of several competing providers for tax payment channels and warning against politicising tax administration.
