A mass shooting in the remote town of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia, Canada, has left at least nine people dead and dozens injured after gunfire erupted at both a secondary school and a nearby residence, authorities and multiple news agencies reported.

The suspected shooter also died at the scene from an apparent self‑inflicted wound, police said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said the incident began around 1.20pm local time on Tuesday when police received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

Officers arriving at the scene found six people shot dead inside the school, with a seventh victim dying en route to hospital.

Police later discovered two more bodies at a residence believed to be connected to the attack.

In total, 27 people were wounded, including two with serious injuries and others with non‑life‑threatening wounds, the RCMP added.

Officers believe there are no additional suspects or continuing threats to the community.

The suspect was reported by Canadian media to be a female wearing a dress, but the RCMP did not release their identity pending further investigation.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, responding to the tragedy, said he was “devastated” by the horrific violence, and cancelled planned travel to the Munich Security Conference in light of the attack.

Local officials, including the British Columbia premier, expressed deep sorrow and emphasised support for the affected families and the small community, which has a population of about 2,400 residents.

Mass shootings are extremely rare in Canada, making the incident at Tumbler Ridge, a town nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, particularly shocking.

School authorities confirmed that both the secondary school involved and the nearby elementary school were placed in lockdown during the incident, and will remain closed as the community begins recovery efforts.

Emergency responders, including air rescue services, quickly attended to the injured and transported some victims to larger medical centres.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the attack, including how the victims and the suspect may be connected.

This shooting is one of the deadliest in Canada’s recent history and has reignited public debate over gun laws and safety measures in the country.
