At least six people have died after a small plane crashed into a residential area near Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.

The plane, which belonged to an air ambulance service, took off from Wilson Airport in Nairobi at 2.14pm and was on its way to Somaliland. About 40 minutes later, it crashed into houses in the Mwihoko area of Kiambu County.

Local police said the crash happened near Morendat Farm, on the northeastern side of Lake Naivasha.

The Kenya Red Cross said four people on board the aircraft, including the pilot, died in the crash.

Two other people who were inside one of the houses hit by the plane also died. Two more people were seriously injured.

One witness said she heard a loud noise, saw a fireball, and then debris scattered across the area.

Videos shared online showed firefighters working to put out flames in what looked like a residential compound.

The plane was operated by AMREF Flying Doctors, an air ambulance service.

In a statement, the organisation said it was working with aviation authorities and emergency teams to find out what caused the crash. It did not confirm how many people were on board.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the plane lost contact with air traffic control just three minutes after takeoff.

The authority called the incident a tragedy and expressed sadness over the lives lost.

Rescue teams from the Kenya Red Cross rushed to the scene in Kiambu County, which borders Nairobi.
