Arrested Tenant Tells How He Was Rewarded after Assisting in ‘Wife-Arranged’ Murder of Lagos Landlord and His Mistress

Patience Ogbo/

A suspect paraded by the police in Lagos today told how he was rewarded after assisting his landlord’s wife in the murder of the man and the mistress.

Promise Oguegbu told NewsmakersNG how he was given the key of his landlord’s car by the wife after the man and his mistress were murdered allegedly under her supervision.

“I asked her what it was and she said I should join her in the main building which I did. I saw a tall huge man in the sitting room, the man ordered me to tie the hands of the landlord’s girlfriend. My landlord and his girlfriend were shouting for help, but there was nothing I could do. I was also afraid for my own life.

Ogbuegbu’s confession was a twist in the murder case of the 50-year-old landlord, an accountant identified as Mr Rasaki Balogun and his suspected mistress, Muyibat Alabi, which was reported last month at Ejigbo Police Station by the victim’s wife, Mrs Akorede Balogun.

But further investigations by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Ejigbo, CSP Olabisi Okuwobi, exposed more about the murder at House Number 16, Taiwo Oke Street, Victory Estate, in Ejigbo.

Mrs Balogun allegedly reported the murder without mentioning in her statement what actually happened and Ogbuebu who has now admitted that he was an accomplice in the homicide.

Ogbuegbu confessed during police parade today that Mrs Balogun involved him in the murders.

He said that Mrs Balogun forcefully poured a poisonous liquid into the mouth of the victims which led to their death.

Ogbuegbu, a South-Korean returnee also claimed to have witnessed the murder after he was invited to assist in tying the hands of the female victim.

He mentioned the involvement of another person that he described as a hefty man.

When the Lagos State commissioner of police (CP) Zubairu Muazu paraded him before journalists at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba paraded Ogbuagbu said, “I am a returnee from South Korea but was yet to be granted a visa back, when the incident happened on June 18. On that day, my landlord’s wife came around, she called me to come and assist her with something.

“I did not kill my landlord, it was my landlord’s wife that poured something in the man and her girlfriend’s mouth. I was the one that saw her putting it.

“Mrs. Balogun gave me her husband’s car key and said I should be quiet and not expose her. Why I did not report to the police was because I was scared.”

Giving further details, Ogbuagbu said although Mrs Balogun and the said man who was an accomplice in the crime were arrested by the police, their whereabouts are unknown to him as he has not set his eyes on them for some days now.

“They arrested the woman and I don’t know where she is now even the other guy that was with him was also arrested, I don’t know where they took them to. I am not the one to be carrying their cross, they are not innocent of this crime. The police should also bring them to answer to the crime.”

The police in Lagos had issued a statement on the death of the victims saying they were found dead at the named address.

The police stated that it was Mrs Balogun who brought the incident to their attention.

Mrs Balogun who is her husband’s second wife lives at 2, Igbehinadun Estate, New Heaven, Iba, but allegedly trailed the man and his mistress to his house on the day of the murder.

Police investigations are still on to find if Ogbuagbu’s claims are true before the suspects are charged to court.
