The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a serving National Youth Service Corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, during a security operation in the early hours of Saturday in Dei-Dei, Abuja.

In a statement issued by Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, the Army said the incident occurred around 2am on April 25, 2026 at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, when troops on routine night patrol responded to a distress call linked to an armed robbery attack in the area.

According to the statement, soldiers attached to the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group encountered armed robbers who opened fire while attempting to flee, leading to what was described as a brief but intense exchange of gunfire.

The Army stated that Jamiu was caught in the crossfire during the operation and later died from injuries sustained in the incident, despite efforts by troops to secure the area and protect residents.

“The unfortunate incident occurred when troops… came under gunfire from the fleeing armed robbers,” the statement said, adding that the situation was “fluid and highly volatile” at the time of engagement.

The Guards Brigade expressed “deepest and most heartfelt condolences” to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and others affected by the loss, describing the incident as a “heartbreaking” development.

The Army also confirmed that a full investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, with assurances that findings will be made public in line with its commitment to transparency and accountability.

Jamiu’s remains have been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital and handed over to the appropriate civil authorities.

The incident has drawn attention following earlier accounts circulating locally, which alleged that soldiers forced entry into a residence and shot through a locked door.

However, the Army’s official position maintains that the fatality occurred during an exchange of gunfire with armed robbers.

The Guards Brigade reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory and said it would review its operational procedures to enhance civilian protection while confronting criminal threats.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to maintain peace and security in the area.
