Arise News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, 29, has been killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday.
Fondly called Sommie by colleagues and friends, Maduagwu reportedly succumbed to severe injuries sustained in the attack.
Born on December 26, 1995, she distinguished herself as a talented news anchor, reporter, and producer, admired for her eloquence, professionalism, and passion for impactful journalism. Before joining the newsroom, she trained as a lawyer — a foundation that enriched her reporting and analysis with exceptional depth and intellectual rigor.
The management of Arise News, in a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, described her death as a devastating loss to the organization and the journalism community.
“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of Arise News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident at her residence in Katampe, Abuja. Her voice may be silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” the statement read.
The Nigeria Police have commenced investigations into the incident.
