The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has lashed out at the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the party as “mindless political dregs” over its criticism of the state burial accorded to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a strongly worded statement, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, condemned the ADC’s attack on the Bola Tinubu administration, calling it “insensitive, unacceptable, and a despicable affront to national decency.”
The ADC had accused President Tinubu’s government of allegedly exploiting the death of Buhari for political gain. But the APC swiftly countered, saying the opposition party lacked empathy, decency, and basic understanding of state protocol in honouring past leaders.
“It is spooky and unconscionable,” Morka fired back. “The ADC has cut its own portrait as a party of political scavengers, devoid of humanity, compassion, and respect for the dead.”
The APC spokesperson defended President Tinubu’s role in granting a befitting state burial to Buhari, describing it as a show of compassion and leadership towards a “fallen patriot who served Nigeria with distinction.”
“What would ADC have preferred? That President Tinubu deny a man who served as military head of state, two-term democratic president, and father to a grieving family, the honour of a dignified burial?” Morka queried.
The ruling party said the ADC’s remarks, coming during a week of national mourning, were not only disrespectful to the memory of Buhari but an insult to the collective grief of Nigerians.
“The ADC’s statement is a tragic demonstration of how desperation for power corrodes every last shred of humanity in some politicians,” the statement read.
Morka praised President Tinubu for personally overseeing the burial arrangements and standing by Buhari’s family, calling it an act of loyalty, patriotism, and statesmanship.
The APC also warned Nigerians to be wary of what it called “ADC’s gang of political marauders prowling for power with no agenda beyond peddling lies and promoting division.”
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away last week in London, was buried with full state honours attended by President Tinubu, top government officials, and foreign dignitaries.
