The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the road traffic accident that left British-Nigerian former world boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, injured and claimed two lives is currently in police custody, as investigations continue.
The update was shared on X on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, who stated: “The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing.”
The brief statement triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians demanding accountability while questioning what they described as selective justice in the handling of road traffic accidents involving high-profile individuals.
Prominent X user Esty (@Esty_1980) expressed concern about unequal treatment, writing: “So every other Nigerian that ever had accident and lost their lives never matter. I hate selective justice.”
Another user, OSASUMWEN Phoenix, called for broader accountability beyond the Lexus driver, insisting that the Lexus SUV driver, identified as Kayode Adeniyi, “must face prosecution for reckless driving,” while also arguing that “the driver and owner of the stationary truck the Lexus collided with should be identified and persecuted.”
Other reactions focused on the wider implications for road safety enforcement.
DeepInsights (@deepinsigh…) said it was important to “normalise investigating RTAs and prosecuting those found culpable,” adding that such actions could encourage more careful driving on Nigerian roads.
The accident, which occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reportedly involved a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck.
Anthony Joshua was said to be travelling in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Two other occupants, identified as Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, lost their lives, while Joshua sustained injuries and was later confirmed to be in stable condition.
The incident attracted national and international attention due to Joshua’s global profile as a former world heavyweight boxing champion, prompting the police to issue public updates as investigations progressed.
Nigeria records thousands of road traffic accidents annually, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps, with excessive speed, reckless driving and poorly marked or broken-down vehicles among the leading causes.
However, prosecutions remain limited, and public scrutiny often intensifies when prominent figures are involved.
The Ogun State Police Command has reiterated that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that the case will be handled in accordance with the law.
