Another Facebook user, Emmanuel Joseph Liberty, has posted what appeared like a suicide note following the death of a final year student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Chukwuemeka Akachi, who committed suicide on Monday after posting a similar note on Facebook.
Liberty in a reaction to Akachi’s death, which he posted about one hour ago, had written: “I don’t know what might happen to me after this… With a heavy heart … Thanks to all who supported me one way or the other… I was once a good fighter but can’t fight anymore… If there is next life… I pray I shouldn’t be unfortunate like this… I may be next.”
Similarly on a Facebook page, had posted about one hour ago: “Tell them u are hungry all they will say is that God will provide, tell them u have no place to stay… Tell them u need help with job, financial aid.. They will say keep pray… After your death they will say… U shouldn’t have die that way… What’s life without help…”
His Facebook wall has been bombarded with messages of support and encouragement by concerned users, with some calling on those close to him to take urgent action to prevent him from actualising his threat.
Akachi, a native of Eha-Alumona in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, had reportedly battled dementia for over two months before he eventually took his own life.
NewsmakersNG learnt that following an earlier threat to take his own life, two lecturers had been detailed by the university to monitor and counsel him, but that did not prevent the English and Literary Studies student from carrying out his threat by taking a poisonous substance.
Before killing himself, the deceased had written in a suicide note on Facebook: “Forgive me. In case you are the one who found the body. I am really sorry. It had to be someone, you know. I have chosen Jo Nketaih’s poem as my suicide note: ‘They said you came looking for me. I did not drown; I was the water.’ Where do atheists go to when they die? Lol. Amen.“
In a previous post, in which he disclosed his long battle with mental health condition, he wrote:
“My mental health has been on life support for a while now. Thanks to those who call. Text. Visit. Speak to me. May we always remember. May we never forget. You may have added a few hours, months or days to my time here. But you know life support is expensive, right? Thanks for trying. Amen.”
