Ukraine has claimed that another Nigerian national has been killed while allegedly fighting alongside Russian forces in the ongoing war.

According to a statement released by Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence on Thursday, the deceased was identified as Ayebusiwa Olabode Victor, born on April 28, 1992.

Ukrainian authorities allege he was engaged as a mercenary operating within Russian military structures when he was killed in combat.

The claim adds to a series of similar reports by Kyiv alleging that foreign nationals, including Africans, have been recruited or drawn into Russia’s war effort, often through private military networks or irregular enlistment channels.

While Ukraine has consistently highlighted the presence of foreign fighters on Russia’s side, the information cannot be independently verified at this stage.

Russian authorities have not confirmed the identity, nationality, or circumstances surrounding the reported death.

The development underscores the increasingly internationalised nature of the war, where manpower shortages and prolonged frontline attrition have been linked to broader recruitment beyond Russia’s borders.

Several African states, including Nigeria, have in the past warned citizens against joining foreign militaries or participating in mercenary activities abroad, citing both legal consequences and personal safety risks.

The latest claim comes amid continued heavy fighting in eastern and southern Ukraine, where both sides continue to report casualties while disputing battlefield outcomes and territorial control.
