The Imo Traditional Council in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State has placed the Baale of Olojede Village, Orile-Imo, Chief Olakunle Joseph, on indefinite suspension over alleged misconduct and abuse of his chieftaincy title.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was conveyed in a letter issued by the Council Secretary and Seriki of Imo Township, Chief Emmanuel Olaotan Olude, following a directive from the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo.
According to the letter, Chief Joseph was suspended over what the traditional authorities described as “unbecoming and traditionally unacceptable” actions, including instituting legal proceedings against the Alake and alleged misuse of his traditional office.
“On the directive of His Royal Majesty, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, CFR, the Okukenu IV, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, please be informed that you have been placed on indefinite suspension with immediate effect,” the letter stated.
The council noted that the disciplinary measure became necessary because of the suspended chief’s handling of certain grievances and his decision to take legal action against the paramount ruler.
The letter further directed Chief Joseph to immediately stop presenting himself as the Baale of Olojede Village or as a holder of any chieftaincy title within the suburbs of Imo Township pending further directives from the traditional council.
The suspension followed an earlier communication from the Alake to the Imo Traditional Council requesting disciplinary action against the community head.
In the letter addressed to the Odofin of Imo, Chief Babatunde Akeem Adesina, and titled “Suspension of Chief Olakunle Olalekan Joseph as Baale Olojede Village, Orile-Imo,” the Alake said the traditional ruler had been found wanting in actions considered contrary to established traditional procedures.
“You are no doubt aware of the unbecoming and traditionally unacceptable steps being taken by the above-named in settling certain grievances. It is on record that Chief Olakunle Olalekan Joseph, Baale Olojede Village, Orile-Imo, has taken a legal action against the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland,” the monarch stated.
The Alake subsequently directed the Imo Traditional Council to take appropriate action by placing the Baale on indefinite suspension.
The council has not indicated how long the suspension will last, but maintained that the directive remains in force until further notice.
