Tomeka Thiam, the longtime wife of singer and music producer, Akon, has filed for divorce after nearly three decades of marriage.
Court documents obtained by People and TMZ show that the filing, which cites irreconcilable differences, was submitted on September 11, just days before what would have been the couple’s 29th wedding anniversary.
In the petition, Thiam listed the date of separation as “TBD” and named the couple’s 17-year-old daughter, Journey.
She is seeking joint legal custody but asking for primary physical custody of their daughter, with visitation rights granted to Akon.
Thiam is also requesting spousal support while asking the court to bar Akon from receiving any support in return.
Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Badara Thiam, has kept much of his private life away from the spotlight despite his global fame.
He has been linked to multiple partners over the years and is known to have nine children.
Representatives for both Akon and Thiam have not publicly commented on the divorce filing.
The next steps will include a formal response from Akon’s legal team, which will determine whether he contests any of the requests related to custody or support.
The case is expected to draw further attention in the weeks ahead given the couple’s high-profile status and the length of their marriage.
