The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu was shut on Thursday after an Enugu Air aircraft with registration number 5N-BZN experienced a nose-landing gear malfunction while touching down on Runway 08 and became immobile on the runway.
Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), said in a statement that all passengers and crew were safely disembarked and transported to the terminal using apron buses.
He explained that emergency response teams were immediately deployed to safeguard the occupants and secure the aerodrome, with fire tenders and medical services placed on standby in line with aviation safety procedures.
The incident occurred at approximately 7.10pm and the evacuation of passengers and crew was completed without injuries by 7.48pm.
Agbebire noted that FAAN’s priority remains the safety of passengers, crew and all airport users.
He said the site will remain secured while the authority supports the airline operator and investigators.
He added that FAAN will work with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau, or any designated investigation body, to conduct a full technical review.
Further updates will be released once verified details become available.
FAAN emphasised that it will not speculate on the cause of the mechanical issue at this preliminary stage.
