First Lady, Aisha Buhari, dispensed with protocol this morning as she opted to refer to President Muhammadu Buhari as “General” in her birthday message to him at 77.
In a congratulatory message she shared on her social media pages, the first lady referred to the President as “GMB”, an acronym for General Muhammadu Buhari.
Also in what seemed like a deliberate effort to make it clear that she did not use the acronym in error, she mentioned it twice in the short message.
Her message reads: “Happy Birthday to MY incorruptible GMB.
“I wish you Allah’s Guidance Protection and Good Health to continue steering the affairs of our dear nation.
“Long Live GMB. “Long Live Federal Republic of Nigeria!”

The PUNCH, had in a front page comment titled “Buhari’s lawlessness: Our stand” published last Wednesday, said as a symbolic demonstration of its protest against autocracy and military-style repression, all its titles would henceforth prefix Buhari’s name with his military rank of Major General, and also refer to his administration as a regime, until his government purges itself of its “insufferable contempt for the rule of law”.
