The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has clarified that it has not issued any official statement on the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) report into the July 13, 2025 Air Peace runway incident at Port Harcourt International Airport.
This follows widespread media reports suggesting that NCAA had cleared the airline’s co-pilot, David Bernard, after preliminary findings.
In a post on X today, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, urged the public to disregard such reports, explaining that while he addressed stakeholders in an X Space discussion yesterday, his remarks were not an official NCAA position.
“I announced this yesterday in an X Space meeting. Disregard any report claiming that the NCAA issued a statement. The Authority has not spoken,” Achimugu wrote.
He added that the Acting Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, would soon speak directly to the issues raised by the NSIB.
The NSIB report had revealed that the Air Peace aircraft touched down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold, well beyond the recommended touchdown zone, before veering off the runway and stopping 209 metres into the clearway.
The report also disclosed that toxicological tests on some flight and cabin crew members returned positive for alcohol and cannabis, a finding strongly denied by the airline staff.
While Achimugu noted during the X Space that NCAA’s internal review did not indict the co-pilot, who had advised the captain to go around, he has now stressed that the authority is yet to issue an official stance.
