Detectives from Zone 2 Police Headquarters in Lagos have held 11 persons in connection with the murder of a traditional ruler in Ogun State, whose body was also set ablaze on January 24, 2022.

According to the police, the arrested suspects have made confessional statements revealing the motive behind the murder.

Four days after the murder, the police received a report through a petition from one Odetola Okunribido on behalf of the entire Okuribido Royal Family of Agodo town, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State stating how Oba Odetola Olajide Ayinde, the Olu of Agodo town in Ifo LGA. Ogun State was murdered by one Gbeminyi Sotade aka Okon and his cohorts.

The police found that about 50 hoodlums allegedly led by Okon descended on the traditional ruler and three of his relatives who had gone to his village to clear the graveside of his late brother on a portion of land. The assailants allegedly assaulted and macheted the victims.

The police narrated in a statement issued today that the hoodlums pushed the traditional ruler into his Red Toyota Sienna SUV 2016 model marked APP 55 GF while one Agbara drove the vehicle in the company of other hoodlums to a nearby forest, where they poured petrol on the victim, and the vehicle was finally set ablaze with the corpse locked in it.

The statement signed by DSP Hauwa Laraba Idris identified the three persons who narrowly escaped death as Alfa Wahab, Deborah Onilere, and Lydia Odetola.

Idris stated: “Eleven suspects have so far been arrested and they have confessed to their involvements in the crime and when asked why they attacked and murdered the traditional ruler, they claimed he was an “Ajagungbale” (Land Grabber). Meanwhile, efforts are at top gear to arrest others at large.

“The public is hereby advised and warned to desist from taking law into their hands by involving in any form of Criminality as whoever is caught up on the wrong side will face the full wrath of the law.

“The AIG is assuring the citizens of Lagos and Ogun states that whosoever is involved in this dastardly act will be brought to book no matter how highly placed the person or group of persons are.

“To all hoodlums coming into Lagos and Ogun states should turn a new leaf or have a rethink of relocating out of the Zone.”
