The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc. (AEDC) has reconnected electricity supply to the FCT Water Board, paving the way for the restoration of water services across parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) affected by recent disruptions.

The power utility said the reconnection followed growing public concerns and appeals from residents after the Water Board was disconnected over unpaid electricity bills.

In a statement, AEDC explained that the disconnection was carried out after the FCT Water Board accumulated more than one year of outstanding electricity debt, despite repeated notices and engagements aimed at resolving the issue.

However, in recognition of the importance of water supply to public health and community wellbeing, the Acting Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of AEDC, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, directed the immediate reconnection to enable water supply to resume in affected areas.

AEDC said the move reflected its commitment to safeguarding access to essential services, particularly those linked to public health and safety.

But the company stressed that the reconnection was granted on a conditional basis.

According to AEDC, the FCT Water Board has been issued a two-week deadline to present and begin implementing a credible payment plan towards clearing its outstanding electricity obligations.

The electricity distribution company warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe would leave it with no option but to reapply service disconnection in line with regulatory guidelines.

AEDC reiterated that disconnection remains a measure of last resort, assuring residents of its commitment to transparent engagement, regulatory compliance and the delivery of sustainable electricity services in the FCT.
