Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has imposed a 24 hour curfew on Igbajo in Boluwaduro Local Government Area following a breakdown of law and order in the community.
The state government said the unrest began on Sunday night and continued into the early hours of Monday. It was linked to rising tensions over the death of Prince Adegboyega Famodun, who passed away last week after a brief illness.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the governor ordered an immediate lockdown of the town until peace is fully restored.
Adeleke condemned the violence and warned that his administration would not tolerate any form of civil disorder capable of destabilising the state.
“It is with deep shock and dismay that I received the sad news of the breakdown of law and order in Igbajo from last night till the early hours of today,” the governor said.
“As a government that believes in strict adherence to the rule of law in ensuring peace and security, my administration will not fold its arms and allow a breach of order anywhere in the state.
“Therefore, as Chief Security Officer of Osun State, I hereby declare with immediate effect a total lockdown of the town pending the return of peace and harmonious coexistence in the once peaceful Igbajo,” he added.
The governor also directed the Army, Police, Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to begin round the clock security surveillance in the area.
Residents, both natives and non natives, were warned to remain law abiding, as anyone found instigating or participating in actions capable of worsening the crisis would be prosecuted.
The unrest followed the death of Famodun, a former chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State and the embattled 30th Owa of Igbajo, who died on Friday at the age of 67.
Famodun was installed as monarch in 2022 during the final days of the administration of former governor, Adegboyega Oyetola. He was later removed by an executive order issued by Adeleke, who appointed Oba Ademola Makinde as his replacement.
In January 2025, however, the Osun State High Court reinstated Oba Famodun. That ruling is currently being challenged at the Court of Appeal.
