The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign from his position in the coming days, according to his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Tunji said the anticipated resignation is linked to Adelabu’s political ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, as well as his desire to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms within the power sector before leaving office.
According to the statement, Adelabu is expected to formally tender his resignation after consultations and approval from President Bola Tinubu.
The aide noted that the minister’s exit would come after what he described as key engagements in the sector, including the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan.
“The timing of his anticipated resignation reflects his commitment to addressing key sectoral challenges and ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms prior to exiting office,” the statement read.
It also referenced recent challenges in the electricity sector, including reduced power generation linked to gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.
Tunji said Adelabu has been working to stabilise electricity generation, improve transmission capacity, and implement reforms aimed at increasing efficiency across the power value chain.
Adelabu, who was appointed Minister of Power in August 2023, has overseen a sector grappling with persistent generation shortfalls, liquidity challenges, and infrastructure bottlenecks, even as the Federal Government continues efforts to attract private investment and improve grid reliability.
