The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has sparked nationwide debate after publicly urging Nigeria’s security chiefs to eliminate terrorists and their sponsors within 90 days or resign from office.

A video of the influential cleric making the remarks began trending across social media platforms on Tuesday, drawing widespread reactions amid growing concerns over persistent attacks by terrorists, bandits and kidnappers across several parts of the country.

In the video, which was shared on the official social media platforms of the church and subsequently amplified by several news organisations and blogs, Adeboye called on the Federal Government to act decisively against insecurity and hold security commanders accountable for results.

“If I were asked to make suggestions, I would say quietly to our government, move fast. And tell our security chiefs, get rid of these terrorists within 90 days, or resign,” Adeboye said in the widely circulated clip.

The respected cleric argued that the fight against insecurity should not be limited to armed groups alone but should also target those who finance, support and enable terrorist activities.

According to him, any government directive to security agencies must extend beyond neutralising terrorists to identifying and dismantling the networks that fund and sustain them.

Adeboye also revealed that he had offered similar advice to the late President Muhammadu Buhari during his administration.

He recalled that Buhari subsequently directed security chiefs to tackle insurgency and violent crime within a specified timeframe, but lamented that the directive was not fully enforced when the target was not achieved.

The cleric said that while religious leaders could only offer counsel, the responsibility for enforcing such directives ultimately rests with the Commander-in-Chief.

The remarks come at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with multiple security challenges, including insurgency in the North East, banditry and mass kidnappings in parts of the North West and North Central, as well as violent attacks by armed groups in several communities across the country.

Adeboye’s intervention carries considerable weight given his standing as one of Nigeria’s most influential Christian leaders.

The 84-year-old pastor has led the Redeemed Christian Church of God since 1981, overseeing its expansion into one of the world’s largest Pentecostal movements with a presence in numerous countries.

The emergence of the video on social media quickly triggered intense discussion, with many Nigerians debating whether security chiefs should be subjected to strict performance deadlines in the battle against terrorism and organised violence.

Neither the Presidency nor the military high command had publicly responded to Adeboye’s latest remarks as of Tuesday evening.

His comments nevertheless add to mounting public pressure on the government to demonstrate measurable progress in tackling insecurity, a challenge that remains one of the most significant tests facing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
