The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a diplomatic outreach initiative, appointing envoys across multiple foreign cities to engage international stakeholders and counter what it described as “one-sided narratives” by the federal government.

In a statement, the opposition party said the envoys, stationed in 12 cities, are expected to interface with foreign governments, policy institutions and the Nigerian diaspora to highlight what it called a “growing pattern of undemocratic practices and attacks on opposition members” in Nigeria.

The move comes amid an escalating leadership crisis within the party and a major regulatory setback involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC had on April 1 announced that it would no longer recognise the rival factions of the ADC led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala, citing a subsisting court order and conflicting claims over the party’s leadership.

The electoral body said it would refrain from engaging with either group or monitoring their activities until the legal dispute is resolved, effectively creating a vacuum in the party’s formal recognition.

The development followed a protracted internal dispute that escalated after the Court of Appeal issued preservatory orders directing all parties to maintain the status quo pending determination of the case before a federal high court.

Against this backdrop, the ADC said its international engagement drive is aimed at ensuring that “credible information” about political developments in Nigeria is communicated beyond official government channels.

Party sources indicated that the envoys would also work to strengthen alliances with democratic institutions and raise concerns about the state of political opposition ahead of the 2027 general election.

The ADC, founded in 2005, has in recent months positioned itself as a coalition platform for opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling party, although internal disagreements have continued to test its cohesion.

There has been no official response from the federal government to the party’s latest initiative as of the time of filing this report.
