Veteran Nollywood actor and Lagos prince, Jide Kosoko, has been named Oloja of Lagos-elect by the King Kosoko Royal Family, according to media reports, filling a position that has remained vacant since 2017.

The royal family formally presented Kosoko at their palace as the Oloja-elect, a title historically tied to market administration and commerce in Lagos.

The announcement immediately sparked controversy.

On X, @ojogbonyemi protested, writing: “Abiola Kosoko remains the duly elected Oloja of Lagos. The coup will not stand.”

He added, “Prince Abiola Kosoko has long been recognised for his role in preserving the Kosoko family heritage, including organising the annual Oba Kosoko memorial lecture.”

Other social media reactions highlighted the ongoing succession dispute. @Aladecho5 commented, “This story is not adding up. What of Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko who was elected as the Oloja of Lagos since 2020 or thereabouts?”

Meanwhile, @fattylincorn_01 noted that a Lagos ruling house, the Akinsanya Olojo Family, a branch of the King Kosoko Royal Dynasty, had formally appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to approve and install Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko, stressing that he was selected as Oloja-elect on December 12, 2020 but remains uninstalled four years later.

The Oloja of Lagos, also called the Oloja of Ereko, is historically reserved for descendants of Oba Kosoko and was responsible for market administration, trade regulation, dispute resolution, and coordination with palace chiefs and the Oba of Lagos.

Traditionally, the Oloja worked alongside other prominent chiefs, including the Apena, Ashogbon and Idejo.

While largely advisory today, the title still carries considerable influence, both in market leadership and in preserving the political legitimacy of the Kosoko royal lineage.
