The Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) has called on the Federal and Borno State governments to prioritize aid for media professionals and scholars impacted by the recent devastating floods in Maiduguri.
The association emphasized the critical role media workers play in keeping the public informed, even while facing their own personal hardships.
In a statement signed by the ACSPN National Secretary, Dr. Biodun Oyeleye, the group urged authorities to ensure that media personnel and their families in the flood-affected regions receive urgent assistance.
The statement highlighted the sacrifices made by these professionals, many of whom are also victims of the flooding, as they continue to report on the disaster to keep the nation and the global community informed.
“We have seen many of them braving deep waters and risking their lives to deliver accurate and timely information to the public,” ACSPN stated. “It is essential that their well-being is safeguarded so they can continue serving the nation.”
The ACSPN praised the swift response of various government agencies but stressed the need for continuous and enhanced efforts to address the flooding crisis, not only in Maiduguri but across Nigeria, where extreme weather events have become increasingly frequent and destructive.
The association expressed solidarity with media workers, scholars, and all other victims of the flood, offering prayers and support during this challenging time. It urged the government to spare no effort in ensuring the safety and rehabilitation of every flood victim, particularly those displaced into emergency camps.
ACSPN’s call for action comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with widespread economic difficulties, including soaring prices and food insecurity. The floods have exacerbated these challenges, causing loss of lives and significant damage to property.
“We call on the federal and state governments to redouble their efforts in combating the issue of flooding nationwide, as a means of continually safeguarding the lives and property of citizens,” ACSPN stated.
