Abuja Residents Relocate as Tremor Persists, Nigerians Demand Immediate Action by Govt

Pat Stevens/

Some residents of the areas most affected by the earth tremors being experienced in Abuja in the last three days have begun relocating to other parts of the city.

NewsmakersNG learnt that residents of these area of Abuja are moving in with relations in other parts such as Gwagwalada.

However, the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, in a tweet today urged residents to remain “calm and vigilant”.

A Facebook user, Omoniyi Ibietan, wrote about a resident that relocated his family today.

“As I write, I am in the midst of artisans who live in Mpape, and one of them has just moved his family to Gwagwalada where his brother lives,” Ibietan wrote on his wall.

He said further: “The experience of the residents of the affected areas, particularly this morning, is very troubling. What can be pieced together from fragments of oral narratives indicate that the vibrations are increasing in tempo and intensity. This matter should be taken seriously.

“Science has not established that Nigeria is within the global earthquake zones, but we may be faced with a situation in which some geological theories are about to be repudiated. So, as I had earlier counselled, we must act thoughtfully and speedily because the reality is that people’s lives are threatened.”

Other Nigerians have been reacting in similar fashion, with majority demanding urgent action by government to address the issue.

Some postulated that the persistent vibrations being experienced in some parts of Abuja could be a result of extensive and uncontrolled activities of illegal miners.

Another Facebook, Yemisi Bamigbade, wrote on his wall: “People will never stop illegal mining..its a way of making livelihood. Govt must clamp down now. Govt knew and looked away from this illegal mining activities by the people. Imagine Abuja, the seat of the govt and nothing is been done…not that the govt is not aware, but govt just never cares..it could cause huge human catastrophes in the near future.”

Most commentators however condemned the statement released today by the city’s emergency management agency on the issue, describing it as non-proactive and “pedestrian”.

Below are some of the online posts:

The FCT emergency agency in a statement had confirmed the occurrence of earth tremors in parts of Abuja and advised residents on the steps to take in the case of any eventuality.
