Renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, Tony O. Elumelu, has been appointed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to its newly formed Advisory Council on Entrepreneurship and Growth.

The council, convened by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, aims to shape global policies that foster innovation and private sector-driven economic expansion.

Elumelu, the Founder and Group Chair of Heirs Holdings, is a leading advocate for African entrepreneurship. His Tony Elumelu Foundation has empowered over 25,000 African entrepreneurs since 2015, reinforcing his belief in Africapitalism—a philosophy that champions Africa’s private sector as the catalyst for the continent’s transformation.

The IMF Advisory Council brings together an elite group of global business leaders, policymakers, and academics, including Marc Benioff (Salesforce), Ana Botín (Banco Santander), Natarajan Chandrasekaran (Tata Group), and Robert Smith (Vista Equity Partners). Their collective mandate is to identify and eliminate barriers to entrepreneurship, ensuring efficient resource allocation and sustainable economic growth worldwide.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting on March 26, 2025, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva emphasized the importance of the council, stating:
“The Council brings together leading thinkers and practitioners in business, finance, and policymaking to share insights on fostering innovation and entrepreneurship—key drivers of economic prosperity.”

With Elumelu’s appointment, Africa’s entrepreneurial potential takes center stage in global economic policymaking, reinforcing the continent’s role in shaping the future of sustainable development.
