The Director of the Commonwealth Institute, Prof. Anthony Kila, has called on women to advocate for the right to pass their surnames to their children.

The renowned political economist and public affairs analyst made this call while delivering the keynote address at the International Women’s Day celebration organized by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in Lagos.

According to Prof. Kila, “Women need to embrace their identity, defend their diversity, and reject assimilation.”

He emphasized that women should not merely react to male-dominated narratives but instead define and champion their own agenda.

Encouraging women to take bold and unconventional stands, he said, “While paternity can sometimes be disputed, maternity is undeniable. It would therefore make sense for children to bear their mother’s surname.”

Also speaking at the event, FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, urged women to be more collaborative and to work towards earning their rightful place in society. She also announced a series of mentorship programs aimed at empowering FAAN staff, particularly women, to advance in their careers.
Prof. Kila, while agreeing with Mrs. Kuku, encouraged women to uphold merit and values, warning against those who attempt to use femininity, gossip, or favoritism rather than hard work to succeed.

The event was attended by FAAN management, industry stakeholders, and representatives from various organizations.
