…Calls for enhanced police training to tackle emerging security challenges

In a renewed effort to strengthen police training and reforms, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun engaged with Commandants of Nigeria Police training institutions nationwide today at the IGP Smart Conference Hall, FCT, Abuja.
During the strategic meeting, the IGP emphasized the need for upholding the highest standards of best practices and discipline across all police training institutions. He urged the Commandants to ensure that training curricula and methodologies align with contemporary security challenges, including cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and community policing strategies.
The engagement follows the recently concluded Conference of Commandants of Nigeria Police Training Colleges/Schools, held at the National Institute for Police Studies (NIPS), Abuja, from March 3rd to 5th, 2025.
Organized in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), GS Foundation, and the German Embassy, the conference focused on enhancing police training strategies for sustainability and global best practices.
Key topics at the conference included the review of training standards, police reforms, recruitment processes, and curriculum development. The IGP reiterated his administration’s commitment to professionalizing police training as a pillar of effective policing and national security.
This commitment has been further strengthened by the recent passage of the Nigeria Police Institution Establishment Bill, which aims to institutionalize a framework for improved police education and training.
