Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has expressed deep regret over the fallout from his recent White House meeting, stressing the need for strong security guarantees as a cornerstone of any peace agreement to end the war with Russia.
In a statement shared on X, Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to negotiate, underscoring that “none of us wants an endless war.”
He reiterated that Ukraine is prepared to take immediate steps, including a truce in the sea and sky and the release of prisoners, provided Russia reciprocates.
“Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way,” Zelenskyy wrote, calling for constructive cooperation in the future. He added, “It is time to make things right.”
In a bid to secure U.S. backing, Zelenskyy signalled Ukraine’s willingness to sign a minerals and security agreement on terms favourable to Washington, describing it as a step toward achieving “greater security and solid security guarantees.”
He emphasised that Ukraine was “ready to sign it at any time and in any convenient format,” opening the door for U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, which are critical to global technology and defence industries.
Zelenskyy also praised America’s role in Ukraine’s defence, highlighting former U.S. President Donald Trump’s provision of Javelin missiles as a turning point in the country’s fight for sovereignty. “We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence,” he wrote.
The Ukrainian leader’s remarks reflect a dual approach: insisting on robust U.S. security guarantees while offering significant concessions to keep Washington firmly in Kyiv’s corner.
His emphasis on peace measures, including bans on attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, underscores a desire for swift action to end the war.
As the conflict grinds on, Zelenskyy’s appeal highlights the stakes involved in ensuring a lasting peace that safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty and leverages U.S. influence to deter future aggression.
His call for security guarantees signals a determination to anchor Ukraine’s future stability in strong international commitments.
