At least 30 people lost their lives in a devastating accident involving two commercial buses at Onipetesi, along the Ore-Lagos highway in Ondo State’s Odigbo Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred yesterday, saw both vehicles collide head-on and burst into flames, leaving 28 passengers burned beyond recognition.
Two survivors, who were rescued with severe injuries, tragically died on their way to the hospital, while two others are receiving treatment.
Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, the Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the casualty figures, explaining that initial investigations suggested one of the buses had driven against traffic, leading to the fatal collision.
“The accident involved two commercial buses, and sadly, both caught fire after the collision. We lost 30 lives in this unfortunate incident,” Ibitoye said.
He emphasised that investigations are ongoing to determine further details surrounding the crash.
The injured survivors are receiving medical attention, and the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue.
The FRSC commander used the opportunity to urge drivers to prioritise road safety by avoiding reckless driving, maintaining their vehicles, and adhering to traffic regulations.
He also encouraged passengers to speak out against unsafe driving practices, stating that road safety is a shared responsibility.
