The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn its defamation case against outspoken lawyer and author Dele Farotimi.
The case, filed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, was abruptly dropped following mounting public scrutiny and the intervention of influential Nigerians.
A notice of discontinuance, dated January 29, was filed under Section 108 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. Signed by police prosecutor Samson Osubu, it revealed that Are Afe Babalola, the nominal complainant, had opted to abandon the suit.
The move has sparked widespread speculation, with many questioning the sudden U-turn. Farotimi’s supporters have gathered at the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti, where the case was expected to proceed.
Though the court is yet to formally strike out the charges, this development marks a significant victory for Farotimi.
