National and institutional issues were addressed on Saturday as the University of Benin Alumni Association (UBAA) held its landmark 100th Council Meeting at the University Senate Chambers, Ugbowo Campus.
NewsmakersNG learnt that the gathering brought together distinguished alumni to deliberate on pressing institutional and national issues, culminating in a communique that highlighted critical areas of development.
In a historic move, the Council extended its congratulations to Professor Edoba B. Omoregie SAN, a celebrated alumnus, on his appointment as Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin.

Praising the University’s Governing Council for its choice, the UBAA pledged full support for Professor Omoregie’s transformative 5-point agenda. His vision includes bolstering academic excellence, expanding vocational training programs, upgrading infrastructure, enhancing staff and student welfare, and fostering a harmonious campus environment.
Beyond institutional matters, the UBAA addressed national issues, commending President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for strides in revitalizing the nation’s refineries.
The Council expressed optimism for a full return to refinery operations and a reduction in petroleum product prices.
Attention was also drawn to federal road infrastructure, with a call to the Minister of Works, Senator David Nweze Umahi, to prioritize urgent repairs of key road networks, including the Benin-Warri, Benin-Asaba, and Benin-Abuja routes. The Council emphasized the need for these projects to be completed before the rainy season to ease transportation challenges.
The Council further urged the Federal Government to address outstanding arrears owed to university workers, warning against potential disruptions to tertiary education. It also applauded the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for efforts in combating insecurity while advocating for more robust measures to ensure safety across the state.
UBAA President, Emmanuel Oriazuwa Esq., reiterated the Association’s commitment to fostering the development of the University of Benin and supporting initiatives that drive progress at the national level.
