Jeremiah Useni, a retired army officer, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a member of the famed ‘Langtang Mafia’, has passed away at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.
The news of his death was announced on Thursday by Gyang Bere, Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang.
In a statement, Governor Mutfwang described Useni’s death as a significant loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation. He praised Useni’s exemplary leadership, highlighting his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s security and political development.
“General Useni’s efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in northern Nigeria and Plateau State, will always be remembered,” the governor said.
Mutfwang recounted Useni’s distinguished career, which included service as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT.
After retiring from the military, Useni ventured into politics, serving as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later as a Senator representing Plateau South under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.
The governor lauded Useni’s lifelong dedication to serving others and noted his lasting influence in the military, politics, and community development.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the president, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning this distinguished elder statesman,” Mutfwang said.
He prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family, Plateau State, and the nation as they grapple with what he called an “irreplaceable loss.”
