The Catholic Diocese of Warri has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe after he entered into marriage with Ms. Dora Chichah at Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA, on December 29, 2024.

The suspension, which follows his violation of priestly celibacy vows, was officially announced on January 16, 2025, in a statement signed by the Bishop of Warri, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido.

The diocese disclosed that prior to the marriage, Fr. Oghenerukevwe had been out of active ministry and without any official assignment in the United States.

On November 30, 2024, he had reached out to the Diocese of Warri, seeking to be released from his clerical obligations under the Roman Catholic Church.

However, the diocese noted that despite its request for required documentation to begin the process, Fr. Oghenerukevwe proceeded to marry Ms. Chichah, with footage of the ceremony widely circulating on social media.

In response, Bishop Ewherido invoked latae sententiae suspension under Canon 1394 §1 of the Church’s Code of Canon Law. This suspension, which takes immediate effect, prohibits Fr. Oghenerukevwe from presenting himself as a priest or engaging in any sacred ministry.

The statement clarified that Fr. Oghenerukevwe retains the right to petition for the amendment or revocation of the suspension under Canon 1734 §1, provided he demonstrates a willingness to reform.

Bishop Ewherido expressed hope for the priest’s reconciliation and guidance on the matter, urging prayers for him during this period.

The diocese reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the sanctity of priestly vows, which include celibacy, as fundamental to the Catholic faith.
