The Lagos State Police Command has raised the alarm over a disturbing rise in attacks and murders of ride-hailing drivers, with three gruesome incidents recorded in the past three months.

During a media briefing, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP) Olanrewaju Ishola, recounted chilling details of recent cases and announced proactive measures to curb the trend.

One such case involved suspects who flagged down a ride, killed the Uber driver, and attempted to sell the vehicle. Police operatives, acting on intelligence, arrested the buyer and traced the seller, uncovering the grim truth.
According to the CP, the body of the murdered driver was exhumed from a shallow grave, and the suspects have since been charged with conspiracy and murder.

In another tragic incident, two suspects— Edmond Julius Abdoulaye and Saturday Okey — were arrested for killing an Uber driver. The victim’s Toyota Camry was recovered and returned to his family, though the driver tragically lost his life.

The Commissioner also detailed a recent case involving four young men who hired an Uber, stabbed the driver to death, and fled the scene. Alerted by the chaos, police operatives arrested two suspects on the spot and later apprehended the remaining two.

Following these incidents, the Commissioner urged ride-hailing drivers to prioritize their safety.

“Be wary of your passengers. If possible, avoid carrying more than one passenger at a time, insist on searching them, and have them sit in the front seat with you,” he said.

The police plan to organize a security sensitization program for ride-hailing drivers to equip them with safety tips and strategies to avoid falling victim to such attacks.
