After nearly three years of anticipation, Oyo town has a new Alaafin.
Governor Seyi Makinde has officially approved Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, following a selection process reportedly conducted by the Oyomesi, the traditional council of kingmakers.
This announcement was made in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who revealed that the decision came after “thorough consultations and divinations.”
The governor’s approval, Prince Oyelade noted, signals the end of prolonged socio-legal disputes that followed the passing of the revered Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ademola Ojo, also lauded the resolution of the contentious selection process. He described it as a “momentous occasion” that restores harmony to the historic Oyo Kingdom.
Ojo called on all citizens of Oyo State to rally behind the new monarch and celebrate this landmark moment.
In his statement, Prince Dotun Oyelade expressed the government’s prayers for a peaceful, prosperous, and unifying reign under the new Alaafin.
The late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who ruled for over five decades, left behind a legacy of cultural preservation and progressive leadership.
The development is expected to mark the beginning of a new chapter for the revered throne of the Alaafin, a position central to the identity and history of the Yoruba people.
The Oyo State Government invites all citizens and well-wishers to join in celebrating this historic occasion as the historic town welcomes its new monarch.
