Christmas came early for 250 widows in Agege, Lagos, as Hydra Edge Foundation extended its annual act of generosity with sumptuous meals and take-home packages.
Marking its 16th year of community impact, the foundation, led by Mrs. Abiodun Opeifa, continues its mission to support widows, orphans, and the less privileged. This year, each of the 250 women received a bag of rice and gari to brighten their festive season.
Mrs. Opeifa, the wife of former Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, Honourable Kayode Opeifa, established the foundation in 2008 with a passion for alleviating the struggles of widows and orphans. Over the years, Hydra Edge Foundation has expanded its reach by including gifts such as blenders, dish drainers, juicers, jugs, and other essential kitchen items during its annual events.
In 2015, the foundation took empowerment a step further by donating generators, deep freezers, grinding machines, and baking machines to support widows in growing their businesses. Financial support has also been part of its initiative, with 20 women in 2011 and 10 women in 2010 each receiving ₦50,000 to start small-scale businesses.
The foundation also emphasizes skill acquisition, providing vocational training in soap making, Adire fabric production, computer applications, makeup artistry, and Gele tying. These programs aim to empower both widows and youths in the community, fostering independence and creativity.
Mrs. Opeifa, a Chicago-trained social worker, expressed her foundation’s willingness to collaborate with trustworthy organizations committed to giving back to the community.
